Entries are now open for the Whangarei Open tournament to be held February 24 – 25th. Some games will be played on Thursday 23rd. You can sign up for the senior player series at this tournament. NORTHLANDERS PROGRESSING THEIR SQUASH…

The year of 2012 is an exciting year for squash and players in Northland. Last year we celebrated a new A grade lady, Sacha Pou-Tito, in the province, and a national age group champ, Finn Trimble, among many other dedicated and talented players who well and truly left their mark on the local and national scenes.

Guts, determination and goal-setting on the part of each individual gets you a long way. Add to that Squash New Zealand and Squash Northland development opportunities and there are plenty of options for those who are keen to advance their squash. On top of that we are lucky to have some very pro-active initiatives around the clubs as well.

Heartiest congratulations to Jacinta Matson who has been selected for the New Zealand Girls World squad of ten players who will prepare for the 2013 World Junior Girls Championships.

Sam Sayes has been rewarded for his dedication, by being selected in the New Zealand development squad for his age group with a view to preparing for World Junior Squads of the future.

Northland’s High Performance Squad, recognised to be some of the potential future representatives for Northland, have committed to attending coaching sessions, regular training, working on their fitness, and playing in set tournaments locally and further afield.

have been accepted to join players from Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty for the first camp February 11/12 in Matamata.

Still to be named is the Northland Junior Elite Squad – participants of which enjoyed so much success last year.

April 10/11 will be the first elite junior squad for the year. Nominations will be called from all clubs for those juniors who are keen and show willingness. There will be 3 further sessions in the year – July 2/3, August 11/12 and Oct 1/2.

Waipu Summer Open Results

The weekend of the 20^th – 22^nd January saw the Waipu Summer Open Squash tournament held at the Waipu Squash Club. This is the second tournament for Northland for 2012.

There were 75 entries from Kaitaia to Auckland. With the numbers entered Bream Bay squash club was utilised to accommodate all the games.

A big thanks to Bream Bay and a great tournament was enjoyed by all that entered and the spectators alike.

Kaitaia once again put on a great tournament to kick 2012 off. With 69 entries including Joseph Watts from Central coming for the hospitality and the chance to have a run before he goes off to Australia to compete there. Trina Moore back home to support her home club with her 2 girls also competing in the girls division. The Hunter family from Auckland also came North for a tournament they know will be filled with good company and food as they are now very familiar faces at many of our Northland tournaments and very welcome. There were the faithful that attend this tournament each year and also those that are new to it and looking forward to the winter Open in June now having experienced the summer open.

Squash Northland Office Holiday

Nirelle Mcdonald named Squash NZ New Coach of the Year for 2011

Congratulations to Nirelle for been named as Squash NZ New Coach of the year for 2011. At the Squash NZ AGM held on Saturday the 26th of November in Auckland the Squash New Zealand coaching awards were named. Nirelle McDonald from Kaitaia had been nominated and was listed as a finalist. She was short listed with Anneke Simmonds – Auckland, Emma Millar – Waikato and Catherine Garlick – Canterbury. Dave Clarke said that the judging this year had been tight but Nirelle’s nomination stood out in the category of New Coach. With those words she was announced as the winner. Well done Nirelle and a well deserved award for all the hard work you have done!
