Northland was treated to a great weekend of squash thanks to hosts the Whangarei Squash Club, with 112 entries in the Northland Open.   Two visitors from the Waikato and nineteen from the Auckland district added interest to the draws.
Northland’s own Tate Matson toppled Panmure’s Ryan Cross in the battle of the A graders at the top of the draw, while Waipu resident Abbie Palmer, who plays her squash in Auckland, took four sets to overcome Mangakahia’s Sacha Pou-Tito.
A very strong mens division two draw concluded with an epic five set battle eventually won by Ron Houben over Whangarei clubmate Jared Gravatt.
The Mens Division Four final proved to be extra important to Max Trimble who held his nerve to beat Peter Houben 15 - 13 in the fifth set.  Not only did this earn him  the championship, it also earned him vital points in the Black Knight series to clinch the top spot and the prize pot!  Kane Turketo who won Mens Division Three therefore had to settle for second spot alongside Sam Sayes.
Another of Northlands rapidly rising juniors, Brittany Gibbons, from Wellsford, added to her good season with a victory in the ladies first division over Miranda Jex-Blake.
With such a good number of visitors, the tournament had a nice social atmosphere, with most entrants staying to enjoy a barbecue on Saturday night.
Thanks went to the tournament organisers and controllers Sharon Crawford, Jared Gravatt, and Karen Dykzeul
A nice touch at the Whangarei club this year is the operation of the kitchen by the Whangarei Academy of Squash kids, ably helped by Nadia, Gemma and friend!

2010 Northland Masters Champions Bruce Smith and Dolly Desmond

2010 Northland Masters Champions Bruce Smith and Dolly Desmond

Kamo Rugby and Squash Club once again hosted the GJ Gardner Homes Northland Masters Squash Championships over the weekend. Sixty eight participants over 35 years old gathered from all over Northland to battle it out for the title of 2010 Northland Masters Champion.

Sunday was finals day, although the two Ladies Over 60’s entrants, 62 year old Kamo stalwarts Pat Schreurs and Jenny Finlayson began their tournament by playing off for the title on Friday night and then continuing the weekend in a draw with players many years their junior.  It took a five set battle before Schreurs took the age group title.  She then went on and had two further victories to take the Ladies Division Three title from Tracey Klaricich.  Finlayson won the plate final in the same division.

A round robin in the Mens Over 60’s saw Kamo’s Mel Matheson take the title ahead of Jim Fraser (Whangarei) and John McKinney (Mid Western).

In the Mens Division One final, defending champion, Kamo’s Bruce Smith held his seeding and fended off Whangarei second seed Marc Hirner.

A fired up Kaitaia second seed Dolly Desmond regained the title she had previously won in 2008, by toppling Fiona Moselen in four sets.

The final of the day was in the Ladies Division Two, where Manaia’s Lynn Ruddock, making a rare tournament appearance, pipped Squash Northland President Leah Goodhew at the post, with a 17–15 victory in the fifth set.

The Northland Residentials, a tournament which finds the Northland Champion in each grade, takes place at the Whangarei Club in two weeks time.

Mangakahia Squash Club has been a hive of activity from Thursday afternoon through to late on Saturday night this weekend as Northland’s best Under-19 players battled it out for the McCoy and Thomas - Hunting and Fishing Northland Squash Junior Open Championships.  An extra dimension was added as this doubled as the event to find the Northland Secondary Schools Girls and Boys Champions for 2010.  Approximately 50 players enjoyed some fierce competition and were appropriately rewarded with prizes and pizza after the event.

In the Girls Open draw, Sacha Pou-Tito (Mangakahia) was no surprise winner over Shontelle Goodhew in three straight sets.  This is Sacha’s last year for this event so no doubt the other girls competing will be looking forward to next year with several 14 to 16 year olds showing considerable promise.  Young Caitlin Foster from Maungaturoto (14) caused a couple of upsets being seeded 7th and accounting for the higher-graded Kerikeri duo of Renee Larmer and Kate Shepherd, in taking out the plate.  Shontelle Goodhew (Kamo), in finishing second, was rewarded with the Northland Secondary Schools Squash title.

In the Boys Open division, second seed Ben Hyde (Kamo) proved too strong for top seed Daniel Notton (Kamo) winning the final in a gruelling five sets.  The win also saw Ben being awarded the Northland Secondary Schools title for 2010.  Ben has been in fine form recently having also won the Kamo B Grade event and beating higher-ranked opposition along the way.  Some consolation to Daniel in the spot prize draw - he won the brand new Black Knight racket.

Another hard-fought match was in the Boys Second division where Mangakahia’s Josh Hulse met Kerikeri’s Frank Robson in the final.  Josh came out the eventual winner at 15-13 in the fifth set.  Well done!

A notable exception from the boys draw this year was Tate Matson who travelled to Napier instead for the Cousins Shield competition (the national club teams event).  Competing at number two for the North Shore Squash club, Tate had a convincing yet surprise win in the second round, against the much higher-ranked Mike McSherry from Palmerston North, in four sets.  This is Tate’s first victory over an A1 player and some consolation for missing out on the NZ Junior Boys team who left for the world champs in Ecuador on Thursday.

Ben Hyde and Shontelle Goodhew, quite appropriately after their school title wins, will be leading Whangarei Boys High School and Whangarei Girls High School squash teams when they head to Christchurch in early August to compete at the NZ Secondary Schools Squash Championships.  The full teams are:
  • Whangarei Girls High School    -    Shontelle Goodhew, Danielle Nauman, Jacinta Matson, Jordanah Thomas and Bridget Johnson
  • Whangarei Boys High School    -    Ben Hyde, Ryan Chestnut, James Green, Chris Smith, Max Trimble, Hayden Nauman, Cameron Johnson
Best wishes to both these teams!

News Highlights

July 9th, 2010
  • Congratulations to Sam Sayes (aged 12 from Whangarei) who travelled all the way to Christchurch to compete in the South Island Junior Champs and WON the Under 13 boys title.       AWESOME!      Hope to hear more about that later but I’m sure he’ll definitely be a player to watch at the North Island Juniors in Napier this coming weekend.  Good luck Sam!
  • Good luck also to the twenty something Northland kids who are also travelling to Napier for the North Island Junior Champs which kicks off on Thursday.
  • Well done to Ryan Chestnut (Mangakahia) who travelled to Papakura on the weekend to play in the Open and competed in style winning his division.  Not so lucky for the other two Northland juniors with Tate Matson gaining 16 points while losing to NZ no. 1 Campbell Grayson in the quarter final before again going down to Joelle King in the semi.  Daniel Notton finished 4th in his division.
  • The Autumn Interclub series has closed with the following results:  Mens Division One - Kerikeri A, Mens Division Two - Kerikeri B, Ladies Division One - Mangakahia A, Ladies Division Two - Kerikeri.  As you can see Kerikeri’s star has shone brightly in this competition.  Well done to all players.

Kamo Rugby and Squash Club was full to bursting over the weekend as they hosted a celebration of Kamo Rugby, as well as not just one, but two squash tournaments at once over the weekend.

In a huge logistics exercise for Kamo Squash Club organisers, twenty six pairs of doubles players and eighty four singles players battled it out over Thursday and Friday nights, and throughout the weekend as they competed in the annual Ivan Pohe Memorial Doubles tournament, and the Wilkinsons/Stirling Sports Kamo B Grade singles tournament.

The doubles competitors ranged from the ‘Strictly Social’ annual pairings of Kamo Stalwarts Tina (Finlayson) Jones and Mel Matheson, and Carol Gardner and Wayne Churton, to the ‘Serious’ division, where Ryan Chestnut paired with recently named NZ Under 19 team reserve, and A graded player Tate Matson, to take the title and the Ivan Pohe Memorial trophy.
The ‘Tryhard’ division, was won by father and son pairing of Ben and Greg Hyde, while the ‘Fun’ division, of mainly mixed pairs went to Neil Lewis and Miranda Jex-Blake.

In the Kamo B Grade tournament, part of the Black Knight series, upsets in both semi-finals of the top mens division, meant that Kamo’s Ben Hyde and Whangarei’s Jared Gravatt battled for the top honours, with Hyde continuing his winning ways to take the title, while top seeds Daniel Notton and Kelvin Moselen played off for third and fourth places instead.
Mangakahia’s Sacha Pou-Tito topped the ladies division one, beating Fiona Moselen in a four set final.
In a thrilling division two ladies final between two of Northlands fastest rising junior girls, Wellsford’s Brittany Gibbons just held off Mangakahia’s Danielle Nauman, to win in the fifth set.
The mens division five, a round robin draw also full of young rising stars, was won by
Whangarei’s Sam Dykzeul, who survived a countback situation to edge out Nathan Chestnut of Mangakahia
Winner of the Black Knight lucky draw was Sacha Pou-Tito.
Kamo Squash Club hosts the Northland Masters tournament at the end of July.

True to form Kaitaia turned on a fantastic weekend of squash for travellers and locals alike over the weekend.  There were 112 entrants all up - seventy six in the senior sections, and thirty six in the junior divisions - not surprising given Kaitaia’s reputation for well run, fun tournaments and even better after-match feeds!

Kamo’s Daniel Notton, one of a large number of travellers from the Whangarei area, took five sets to get past A graded lady Trina Moore who played in both the mens and ladies competitions, before causing an upset in the final and overcoming Whangarei’s Clayton Campbell in a further five sets.

Things went top seeded Moore’s way in the ladies competition however, with convincing victories over all her oponents, including second place getter Abbie Palmer .

One of Northland’s keenest Junior players Sam Sayes, now sits at the top of the table in the Senior Black Knight series, while Kerikeri’s Felix Reed and Vincent Spooner Robinson lead the Junior series.

Whangarei’s Finn Trimble won the $50 lucky draw.

Check the Black Knight results pages for series updates.
